Job Purpose and Summary

As a Correctional Nurse, you will care for individuals who are sick, injured, or otherwise in need of medical assistance within a correctional setting. Under general supervision, you will:

• Provide nursing care utilizing assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation skills.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure effective healthcare delivery and improved patient outcomes.
• Promote and improve overall health among a diverse inmate population, many of whom may not have had consistent access to healthcare prior to incarceration.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited RN or LPN program.
• Current RN or LPN license in good standing with the state licensing board.
• Strong critical thinking and assessment skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to train and provide instruction to other employees.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure timely and appropriate care for inmate patients.
• Administer medications, treatments, and therapeutic agents as prescribed.
• Provide emergency care and first aid when necessary.
• Assist physicians with medical procedures and treatments.
• Conduct patient assessments, record vital signs, and collect specimens for diagnostic testing.
• Document all care accurately and promptly in compliance with facility protocols.
• Educate inmates on health topics and assist with discharge planning.
• Maintain a professional, ethical, and therapeutic environment while upholding HIPAA regulations.
